River Medway and The Swale River Medway and The Swale
The Medway and Swale were the birth place of more sailing barges than any other part of the east coast and this book has more barge material in it than others in the series. It has over 150 old photographs and covers the histories of the major barge owning firms, the barges built for the cement manufacturers and the shipowning firms which grew out of this. Notably Bradleys, Lapthorns and the London and Rochester Trading Company, better known in recent decades as Crescent Shipping. This covers both sailing and motor vessels owned by these companies.
Most of the photographs date from before 1939 and cover the Medway from Sheerness to above Allington Lock. There are also accounts of barge owning and building at Maidstone. The Swale section starts at Queenborough, deals with creeks including Sittingbourne and Faversham and also covers Whitstable barges and the town's famous fleet of oyster smacks.
The book also deals with fishermen of Strood and their bawleys. The Medway's pleasure paddle steamers and some of the ships of the Royal Navy at Chatham and it just touchs on the Medway tugs. There are drawings and maps showing the historic places on the Medway, Swale and Whitstable.
